memoQ

Creation and filling of a MemoQ Termbase

Start MemoQ
Open the Resource console from the Tools menu
At the top: after Server URL, select My Computer from the pick list and click the Select button

  • Select Term bases from Resource
  • Click Create New
  • In the window New term base, specify at least:
    – Name
    – Path
    – the two languages for the term base
  • Click OK to leave the window
  • Back in the Resource console, click Import terminology
  • Specify File Name and Location: browse to the downloaded file set and select (IATE_[lang1]_[lang2]_TB.csv)
  • Along with the new window Term base CSV import settings, a warning is displayed about Non-Unicode code page, because my files have no BOM (Byte Order Mark, code containing the byte order of the file) . You can ignore this warning, as all the files in the package are coded in Unicode UTF-8, so press OK to dismiss the warning.
  • In the General part of the window, select:
    – File encoding: (leave as UTF-8)
    – Delimiter: (leave as Tab)
    – Select First row contains field names
In the Fields part of the window, the following fields are necessary:
    – the second and third fields; for both of them select Import as term, and select the respective language from the pick list
  • The import of the remaining fields is optional; however, should there be future releases of the IATE termbase and of my extractions, it might be interesting to at least import the field Concept-id to enable Update existing entries based on ID
    – If you want to import Concept-id, select Import as other field; and select Entry ID from the pick list
    – If you want to import subjectField, select Import as other field; and select Subject from the pick list
    – If you want to import Context, select Import as other field; and select Domain from the pick list
MemoQ offers no possibility to import the other fields: reliabilityCode, adminStat and termType
    – Leave the selection Do not import for the fields you don’t want to import
  • When all settings are filled in, click the OK button; the import process should start
  • Sometimes, warnings are generated during the import process. Normally, these warnings relate to characters that are not deemed valid by MemoQ in one of the additional fields. These warnings can normally be ignored. If there are warnings generated for fields 2 or 3, please inform me so I can possibly refine the extraction process and help you find a remedy, if necessary. You can save the import log by copying all text in the log window into a separate text file. MemoQ does not store the log file by itself.
  • When the import process has finished, click OK and Close.
